Two weeks in and now I am seriously wondering whether it was worth upgrading at all. While I was waiting I upgraded my old iPhone to version 2.0 software so that gave me all the features of the 3G iPhone apart from obviously the 3G speed and the built-in GPS. Was I really missing anything? I don’t think so.

First thing I noticed with the new 3G iPhone is that the battery life is worse than the old one. In order to get any kind of acceptable battery life out of it I had to turn off push email. I guess it would be okay if you only get a few emails a day but I would leave my phone switched on at night with a full battery and by the time I woke up in the morning the battery would dead.

Some of Apple’s recommendations for improving battery life are:

Fetch new data less frequently:
Turn off push mail::
Turn off Wi-Fi:
Turn off Bluetooth:
Use Airplane Mode in low- or no-coverage areas:
Turn off 3G:

It wouldn’t be so bad if there was one button to press for all these power saving options

but as it stands with the exception of airplane mode which means you can’t use the phone you need to go through several screens to get to the right places to turn these features on or off.

To make matters worse, my Bose sound dock and in-car iPod adapter no longer charges the battery.

Download speeds on 3G vary considerably depending on your location. At times it can seem even slower than the 2.5G but as most of my data usage would be Wi-Fi I don’t really think I would miss the 3G data.

GPS on the iPhone I think is more of a gimmick than a necessity. Until they bring out a full blown navigation system like TomTom for example I can’t see it’s going to get a lot of use.

The 2.0 software is brilliant though together with the hundreds of applications you can get for your iPhone from third party developers. This is only get to get better as more and more software apps become available. If you couldn’t use the 2.0 software on the original iPhone (which you can) I would say the 3G iPhone is a must have.

If you haven’t already got an iPhone then go out and buy a 3G one now. You won’t regret it. If you’ve got an original iPhone and are still waiting for a 3G one you really aren’t missing that much.

Although the 3G iPhone is taking the United States and other countries by storm, the smartphone still cannot be compared to the mobile phones made in Japan.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, Kendrick Go from Manila Times, said that the 3G iPhone would certainly appeal to the Filipinos. However, because of the price (unit price plus the service plan price), this would become one of the main reasons why Filipinos would not buy the 3G iPhone.

From the article of Ars Technica, they said that if the Apple Inc. would still retain the same lens in the 3G iPhone and make use of a higher resolution sensor, the images would not be sharper. Moreover, it is simply not acceptable if there would be a sharpness of a 2-megapixel camera in a 5-megapixel camera. There is another option though. Apple Inc. may

try reducing the size of 3G iPhone’s lens opening. However, if it is the case, the amount of light reaching the sensor would certainly be reduced. As a result, the 3G iPhone will have a tougher time taking nice picture when placed in a location with dim lighting. Aside from that, Ars Technica also mentioned that another problem would certainly arise if Apple Inc. would improve the camera of the 3G iPhone. The more megapixels that are compressed in the same sensor, the smaller would be the pixels. This would produce underexposed pictures as well as images that are filled with noise.

If Apple Inc. would really want to have an improved iPhone camera, they should add other features instead such as improving the lens quality, adding auto focus, adding a flash or add a better software for the camera.

TUAW reader Ian Donaldson discovered that the SBEnableAppReveal preference allowed you to double-tap hidden applications to reveal them–and double-tap them again to re-hide them. I decided to see whether I could extend that behavior to other applications. After a bit of examining, I discovered the SBIsRevealable preference in the three keynote applications: YouTube, Safari and iTunes. So after modifying plutil to allow it to set Boolean values as well as strings, I went ahead and issued the following command:

1. Create a new playlist. Drag unpurchased songs from the iTunes store into your playlist. The songs will retain their “Add Song” buttons and their price within the playlist.

2. Export your playlist. choose the playlist in the sources column. Control-click/Right-click the playlist name and choose Export Song List from the pop-up menu.

3. Save the playlist as plain text. choose Plain Text from the Format pop-up and save the playlist file to your desktop.

5. Locate the file URLs. Each file URL appears in the final Location column for each line. Copy the URL.

6. Download

the files. In Safari 3.0, open the Downloads window (Windows->Downloads). Paste the URL into the Download window and allow the file to transfer. Your computer must be authorized to your iTunes explanation. You may want to try playing back the file in QuickTime Player just to be certain it downloaded correctly. whether you’re not a Safari 3.0 user, use your favorite alternate such as curl, wget, or so forth.

9. choose the ringtone. On the iPhone, navigate to Settings -> Sound > Ringtone and choose the new file. The iPhone ringtone will play back as you choose it. Please note that some newer releases (including Nicole Scherzinger’s Whatever U Like–thanks Drunk Dwarf) do not work as ringtones. I’m not certain why.

Congratulations, not only have you added a new 30-second custom ringtone to your iPhone, but iTunes usually picks the best 30 seconds of any song for its preview. Enjoy.

But why is Apple Inc. taking so long to distribute the second-generation iPhone legally in Russia and in China? According to the CEO of the company, Steve Jobs, Apple Inc. is still on the process of going through the hoops before it can be distributed in China. But they are hoping that the highly-anticipated second-generation iPhone will be available in Russia as well as China before the year 2008 ends.

Although actual UK sales figures have not been disclosed, The Sun and the Daily Mirror have reported that between 70,000 – 100,000 iPhones were sold during the weekend. A far cry from the 200,000 first day sales figure in the United States, but Apple isn’t complaining. Based on the prevailing picture, strong sales demands can be expected this Christmas. The only question which remains is, will the availability of iPhone devices be able to meet the upcoming holiday demands?

O2 has confirmed record breaking 8,000 iPhone activations on launch day, which was unexpectedly more than double than the initial estimate of 3,000 activations. With the actual iPhone sales pegged to be significantly higher than the 8,000 activations, two thirds of which are new customers, O2 has revealed it has recently signed an exclusive 5 year contract with Apple. A bold move in light of the potential influx of new subscriber base which the iPhone sales is driving.

The seemingly lackluster ovation may be rooted in

the iPhone’s lack of 3G technology, which Apple has announced it will tackle no earlier than late 2008. The cost of the iPhone, coupled with the late technology has put off the European market, long used to the free handsets and cutting edge WiFi mobile technology.

Unlike other high end mobile phones currently in the European market, the iPhone relies on the significantly slower EDGE connectivity. To make matters worse, UK’s O2 EDGE coverage is at a measly 30%, although the company reports on planning expansive tower upgrades to increase current coverage. This, despite the view from most European mobile users that iPhone technology seems to be a step down from what they currently enjoy in the mobile market today.

Even during the launch, iPhone has announced it plans on numerous upgrades to the ubiquitous iPhone, which leaves most potential buyers confused over the hype, and cool over the iPhone’s first day launch. Although this will come as a welcome move by some disappointed iPhone owners, the iPhone limitations may have put off once eager fans. The European iPhone sales may never quite match the stateside’s sales, but it is believed to be significant enough to help meet Apple’s goal of 10 million iPhones sold by 2008.

Straight out of Cupertino, an Apple spokesperson says that they are indeed working on new features for the iPhone upcoming in new firmware releases. After a faraway date with a non-jailbroken iPhone, citizens will finally be able to use new features.

Some new sleek things being rumored around are things such as a video recorder, stereo bluetooth playback, and ability send picture messages.

Apple is releasing updates of new features slowly to keep users interested in the iPhone.

After seeing the iPhone’s slow refresh rate on the camera, it would likely be impossible to produce a iphone video camera with a decent frame rate. Hopefully Apple does keep us updated with new technology and more things the iPhone has already been shown capable to do.
